Mumbai to Goa Coastal Drive, Maharashtra: A Scenic Journey Along the Konkan Coast

What an exciting journey would be on a motorcycle. Especially The Mumbai to Goa best Coastal Drive Maharashtra. Dangerous, exciting as well as thrilling an unforgettable road trip. One of the beautiful road trips of the Konkan coastline in Maharashtra. Stretching along the Arabian Sea, I was thrilled to see the picturesque route that gives calmness and joy while riding along the serene coastal landscapes.

Route Overview: I started my journey in the morning around 6:00AM, so that to avoid traffic. I planned the route through the Konkan coastline, passing through charming towns, pristine beaches, and lush green landscapes before reaching Goa.

I was a bit scared to drive on my motorcycle from Mumbai to Goa!

This might have happened with you also, the scariest part when Google Maps rerouted me for faster route through Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary.

There was no one except me and 2 other cars for the entire one-hour journey.

Throughout my drive, I encountered uneven road on quite a few stretches. The only good patch was probably the Mumbai Pune Expressway followed by Pune Satara Road.

The First Stop: Alibaug

After riding my motorcycle for a few hours on the road, I reached Alibaug.

I was breathing the costal smell of humid air of Alibaug which is famous for its beaches and historic forts.

I was so happy to see myself on a road which is surrounded by coconut palms and as I gazed I was able to see the view of the Arabian Sea. The view and the road was so beautiful as if I felt “I am the hero of a Bollywood movie” riding along the Arabian sea on a road surrounded by coconut and palm trees!

I decided to make a quick detour to Alibaug Beach. The beach was quiet and peaceful.

I stopped my motorcycle to feel the freshening air of the Arabian sea touching. 

As I closed my eyes to enjoy the serene surrounding, the soft sound of foot step of morning walkers passing me.

And far from me the sound of thug, thug, clinking of metal near the seashore the fishermen preparing their boat.

Then, I decided to take a walk and feel the moment. So, I parked my motorcycle, got down to talk a walk. I removed my riding gears, then I removed my shoes and started walking on the sand enjoying the cool sea breeze and the soft sand under my feet.

A replenishing drink of a coconut water at the beach side was the perfect start to the day.

Next, I visited Kolaba Fort, a historic sea fort that you can walk to during low tide. The fort has a fascinating history dating back to the 17th century and offers stunning views of the surrounding sea and coastline. Exploring the fort’s ancient walls and ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of the past.

Scenic Drive through Konkan

Continuing the journey, the drive through the Konkan region was simply breathtaking. The lush greenery, twisty and winding roads, and occasional glimpses of the Arabian Sea made my motorcycle ride exciting as well as extremely pleasant. This stretch of the road is known for its scenic beauty, with verdant hills on one side and the endless blue sea on the other. As I drove through small villages, I was greeted by friendly locals and curious children waving from the roadside.

Pit Stop at Harihareshwar

My next stop was Harihareshwar, known as the “Kashi of the South.” The town is famous for its serene beaches and the Harihareshwar Temple, located right on the coast.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is an important pilgrimage site. After parking my motorcycle, I took a short walk to the beach, which was almost deserted except for a few fishermen mending their nets. The sight of the temple against the backdrop of the sea was truly mesmerizing.

I spent some time exploring the temple complex, which has a calming and spiritual atmosphere. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks added to the serenity. I also took a dip in the cool waters of the Arabian Sea, which was a refreshing break from the drive. After a light lunch at a local eatery, where I savored some delicious coastal cuisine.

Day 2: Exploring Ratnagiri

The next morning, I continued my journey towards Ratnagiri. I enjoyed the ride.  During the ride I was able to see the beautiful landscapes.  Therefore, I took occasional stops to capture the beauty.

I heard from the locals that Ratnagiri is famous for mangoes, especially the Alphonso Mangoes. I was imagining the mouthwatering taste of Alphonso, will it be taste or juicy. 

Finally, I reached Ratnagiri by afternoon and checked into a budget hotel.

Ratnadurg Fort, also known as the Bhagwati Fort. Perched on a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea, the fort offers panoramic views of the coastline. I spent few hours exploring the fort’s ramparts and enjoying the stunning views. The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sight of the waves crashing against the rocks below was awe-inspiring.

Next, I visited the Thibaw Palace, a beautiful mansion built in the late 19th century. The palace was once the residence of the exiled king and queen of Burma (now Myanmar).

The architecture of the palace is a blend of Indian and European styles, and the interiors are adorned with intricate carvings and beautiful frescoes. The palace also houses a museum showcasing artifacts and memorabilia from the period.

In the afternoon, I headed to Ganpatipule Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Ratnagiri. The beach is known for its clear waters and golden sands, making it a perfect spot to unwind. I spent the rest of the day lounging on the beach, swimming in the sea, and enjoying the local delicacies from the beachside shacks. As the sun began to set, the sky turned into a riot of colors, creating a perfect end to the day.

Hitting the Road Again

The next morning, I set off early for the final leg of my journey. From Ratnagiri, the drive became even more picturesque. The coastal road, with its twists and turns, provided some exhilarating driving moments. The sight of the sun rising over the Arabian Sea was absolutely magical. I made several stops along the way to capture the stunning views and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Day 3: Reaching Goa

As I crossed into Goa, the change in scenery was evident. The colorful houses, palm trees, and relaxed atmosphere signaled that I had arrived in the land of beaches and fun. My first destination in Goa was the beaches of North Goa. I headed straight to Baga Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Goa. The beach was bustling with activity, with tourists and locals enjoying the sun, sand, and sea.

I spent the rest of the day exploring the beaches of North Goa, including Anjuna Beach, Calangute Beach, and Vagator Beach. Each beach has its own unique charm and vibe. Anjuna Beach is known for its vibrant flea market, where you can find everything from clothes and jewelry to souvenirs and local handicrafts. Calangute Beach, often referred to as the “Queen of Beaches,” is a great place to enjoy water sports like parasailing and jet skiing. Vagator Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and scenic views, is perfect for a quiet and relaxing time.

In the evening, I explored the lively nightlife of North Goa. The beach shacks and bars come alive with music, dance, and laughter. I enjoyed a delicious dinner at one of the beachside restaurants, savoring Goan specialties like fish curry and prawn balchão. The night ended with a stroll along the beach, with the sound of the waves and the starry sky creating a magical atmosphere.
